Tuba Christmas
TubaChristmas History and CelebrationOn Sunday, December 22, 1974 on the
Ice Rink Stage of New York City's Rockefeller Center, over 300 tuba and
euphonium players gathered to honor the memory of William J. Bell (born
Christmas Day, 1902) and to celebrate his considerable achievements as a
performer and teacher. The arrangements of traditional Christmas carols
performed on that historic occasion, the first TubaChristmas, were contributed
by American composer Alec Wilder (died Christmas Eve, 1980). It is therefore
fitting that every TubaChristmas be dedicated to great performers who gave
us our methods and pedagogy, and to all composers who have embraced our
instruments with their solo and ensemble compositions. It is important that
we share with the public audience this celebration of our heritage. It is
an opportunity to demonstrate our serious commitment to music and to showcase
the of our instruments in ensemble. Anyone who has heard a TubaChristmas
concert will never forget the experience. It is no wonder that since 1974
TubaChristmas has become a tradition in cities throughout the world.
